9th - Concept Design "Firefly" Workshop - 1:00pm - 4:30pm with Resident Natalia de la Torre
(Maximum attendees: 8)
This course is a guided exploration in world building and conceptual designs. Both costume and set design fields are encouraged to attend; lighting and sound fields are welcome but this project is mainly a visual one.
Sometimes when working on a Shakespeare or Greek play, designers are tasked with creating a world that touches on several other times/places/styles – similar to the television show “Firefly” which is a Chinese western in space. In this workshop, we will choose three completely unrelated themes and find a way to combine them into one cohesive environment – the more creative the better! We will offer basic art supplies, magazines, and other visual aids to help communicate your design. There’s no wrong concept, this is just a way to stretch our aesthetics in the off-season!
Play we will be designing: Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare
We will begin with an explanation of the project, writing of themes and then choosing from the hat. We will then have two hours to create a concept and produce some sort of visual representation of that concept in any way you choose. We will then have one hour to present and discuss all our concepts. If we have enough variety of designers (sets and costumes) maybe we can combine our work.
REQUIRED STUDENT RESOURCES
Please be familiar with Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare.
We will provide paper, some magazines, glue and scissors but if you have your own art supplies you like to render with or extra magazines at home, please do bring them! Things like:
